Overview of MSME or Udyam Registration

MSME or Udyam Registration is a certification provided by the Indian government to facilitate and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This registration brings several benefits, including eligibility for various subsidies, lower interest rates, and access to government tenders and schemes aimed at promoting the growth and sustainability of small businesses.

The registration process has been simplified through an online portal, where enterprises can register by providing basic details and self-declared financial information without the need for physical paperwork. Once registered, the enterprise is assigned a permanent identity number known as the Udyam Registration Number, making it easier to avail of government subsidies and participate in promotional activities.

Revised MSME Classification

Initially, when the government introduced MSME registration in 2006, the classification was based solely on investment in plant and machinery or equipment. The government has since revised the MSME classification criteria to include both annual investment and annual turnover. Additionally, the distinction between manufacturing and services sectors has been removed.

The current MSME classification, as per the notification S.O. 2119(E) dated June 26, 2020, considers both investment and annual turnover to determine if an entity qualifies as an MSME:
